Since the eclipse fell just before sunset, we needed somewhere that balanced a good weather forecast with high elevation - which is how we settled on Lerma. Our original plan was to watch from the hilltop church in town, but about an hour before first contact, we collectively decided to look for a different backdrop: specifically, a sunflower field. So we drove northwest along the road until we found a good spot to stop. We arrived just in time for first contact and sat in the fields watching as the moon slowly crept across the sun. Totality gave us a beautiful corona, with hints of pink, and the conditions were so perfect we even caught a glimpse of Venus.
